How to Take Care of Your Weaves: Brazilian, Peruvian Remy and Malaysian Hair
Your weaves are made from natural, virgin hair and need to be taken care of and protected from the elements. It’s easy to mix up the types of weaves, they are all virgin hair and to some extent, look very much alike. Even though the methods used to take care of them are essentially the same, it is still helpful to know the differences and how to identify each type of virgin hair.
Brazilian hair: it is one of the most beautiful types you can get. It is usually full and bouncy and comes in different textures; it can be wavy, curly or straight. This type of virgin hair is known for its waviness, even the straight hair still seems to have some waves in it. It is usually very soft and smooth to touch.
Malaysian hair: if you are looking for volume and thickness, you should consider going with Malaysian hair. It is very full with a smooth and silky texture. Malaysian hair naturally comes in dark colors with a straight texture, however, it also holds up its curls very well.
Peruvian hair: it is very lightweight but has a thicker texture than the others. Most African-Americans prefer it because of how easily it blends in with relaxed hair. It also blends in well with medium hair textures for Caucasians. Because of how lightweight it is, you can have over five bundles on with no discomfort at all.
Tips on Taking Care of Your Virgin Hair
Installing your hair:
Avoid cutting the tracks of the hair (the part that holds strands together), if you absolutely have to, make sure you seal it before installing the weave. This is to prevent shedding.
When installing, weave around the tracks of the hair to keep the stitching strong and reduce the chances of having the hair shed.
Coloring your hair:
Even though your weave is made from natural hair, hair dyes and other color- changing products contain chemicals that can remove moisture from the hair (leaving it dry and dull looking). You need to avoid using any product that could be harsh on the hair.
For best results and preservation, take the hair to a professional to do the coloring. If something goes wrong, you can damage the hair to an extent where it cannot be fixed again.
Make sure the stylist deep conditions the hair after coloring or bleaching it to prevent as much damage as possible.
Washing your hair:
Shampoo the hair once to twice a month and very gently. You need to preserve the natural oils and nutrients in the hair for as long as possible. Too much washing with shampoo can strip these essentials from the hair.
Do not use hot water on the hair, it is drying and damaging.
Conditioning your hair:
You can condition your hair twice a month; this way, the hair is cleaned. Conditioning helps in retaining moisture content, which is healthy for your hair.
For best care, use a paddle brush to brush the hair out, avoid scrubbing the hair and rinse with warm water.
Drying your hair:
Your best option is to let your hair air dry naturally. Your weave needs to be kept away from heat as much as possible.
If it is necessary for your hair to dry quickly, set your hair dryer at medium heat.
Straightening your hair:
Make sure you use a heat protection product and a leave in conditioner on the hair first. This is necessary to protect the hair from heat damage.
It is advised that you avoid using heat tools on your hair as much as possible. This would help the hair look healthier and hold its texture longer.
Note: avoid using products containing alcohol on your weave. Alcohol is very drying and will strip your skin of its natural essentials.
